NEVADA ON LAKE TAHOE CAMPING HALF THE TIME IN THE MOUNTAINS BROKEBACK STYLE AND ON MY THREE DAY WEEKENDS LIVING IN A PIMPED OUT CABIN AT 8,000 FEET OH MY GOSH WHAT.
i'm working for a nature conservancy. why, oh. why.

LIFE YES WOO.

postsecret is blocked on the internet at the junior high that i'm at.
what. the fuck.

also. i sat in the back of the room working on negatives and positives and whit like that with this spastic ADHD kid who's almost 16 and failing out of 8th grade while he talked about what would happen if he came to school and shot his math teacher.
the school systems and the kids in them are ridiculous amounts of different around the country, man. it's a little bizarre but such a reality check that CHS could have sucked so much more.
anyway i have a little over a 100 kids total each day and i really really like them and yeah. some of them are pretty much crazy, but they're so much fun. being a teacher must seriously be the most exhausting job ever because i do probably 1/100 of what any normal teacher does and this project is the most tiring thing i've ever done.
why it's so awesome though, case in point. yesterday this girl came up to me and goes, "are you going to be at the after school tutoring program, too? because mrs wesley makes things confusing....but you don't."
oh man i fucking died.

also side note. they're filming a movie at the state park we live in and it's awesome and there are all sorts of camera crews and sets and tents and millions of vehicles and AN ANTIQUE COOL LOOKING CAR that they're TOTALLY gonna use in the movie all over the place and brad pitt is in the movie and so we've been running around our housing screaming for him and angelina and maddox and shiloh and sahara or whatever. in addition, it's even cooler BECAUSE.......it's a movie of the f scott fitzgerald novel, the curious case of benjamin button..which like i didn't even KNOW they were making a movie of, and especially not with brad pitt and ESPECIALLY not in my backyard ahahahahahahaahahahahahah.

today my team did our debrief on our first spike project. it really put into perspective how seriously amazing and great and enjoyable and productive and enriching and gratifying and successful the past 3 months of my life have been. here is a small summarization of a tiny part of those months..in the words of my teammate, molly, who was way more well spoken in writing her mandatory reflection than i was.

This first project started with an arranged marriage. A seemingly unlikely pairing of eleven individuals, granted one van, twenty-two pieces of luggage, and an assignment a couple thousand miles away in Mississippi. Over the course of the ensuing week, all of us “newly-weds” stole covert glances at each other, and we bonded by trying to fit everyone’s musical preferences on a single radio. We took turns playing nurse while traveling across the desert as several of the teammates got sick in succession and wondered if we’d ever make it to that vague and far away area known as the “Gulf Coast.”

Arriving first in Louisiana, we were shocked to see how much widespread damage still existed more than a year after the storm and were silenced by the inspectors’ crosses painted on the houses that listed the initials of the inspector, the date inspected and the number of dead found within. We took morbid comfort from words like “One dog, one canary found alive” when they were painted too, sometimes it seemed like the only positive thing we saw.

After our stop in New Orleans, we headed to our project site in Mississippi. When we found out we’d be working on finishing volunteer housing, we were a little downhearted because it didn’t sound as significant as a Habitat for Humanity home for a family, which is what we thought we’d be doing.  However, the project began to take on more meaning as we saw how many volunteers came and went each week. It was true, we weren’t building one home for one family, but we were helping finish a place that, over the years, hundreds of people can call home, however temporarily. These volunteers would, in turn, help build those single-family homes, and their volunteer housing would be the bridge that allowed them to do this.

As our project came to a close, the team attended the dedication of a street of Habitat houses, and our broader goal, our bigger purpose became truly apparent. Thirteen houses were presented to thirteen families, but hundreds of people were responsible for their construction and completion. If not for the volunteer housing, many of the volunteers would not have come to Biloxi, Mississippi at all. When we left the project, we left with tears, not because we were downhearted, but because we were leaving our home, however temporary.

hey!
just as an fyi, from the wednesday before thanksgiving through sunday morning after thanksgiving i'm most likely going to be in charleston, SC and would love to see some of you super duper people. i'm going with as many teammates as will fit in a rental car and am saying either with a teammate's sister or with random people from americorps OR last resort in a hostel right near where the teammate's sister lives. some of the time i may be with the kids on my team but i also have a huge amount of time that i plan on alotting for walking around charleston and exploring by myself and it would be so incredibly cool if the impossible happened and SOMEONE decided to road trip down coincidentally at the SAME TIME that i'll be there. i could easily find you shelter (though it MIGHT cost some small change) and you could totally stay for as long/short as you wanted to. just a thought. anyway. either way i hope you people have good thanksgiving festivities and such.

i'm doing well but am constantly exhausted from everything. we walked to the beach the other day to do yoga and we were walking past all the houses with the X's in spraypaint on them with number of bodies and pets found and such and it was weird thinking that this is where i live. we're supposed to integrate ourselves into the communities we're working with and so it's crazy realizing that it's my home, you know? this place where almost all of the houses are still destroyed and where there are shootings and poverty and high concentrations of races other than caucasian. it's so NOT cohasset and it's the new community that i'm supposed to be fully a part of. and what's great is that people totally accept you. i talk to people in stores and i'm making acquaintances with these people who until now i've only known about through news articles and tv broadcasts. i'm going to local chili cookoff this saturday i think, and the local high school football game on friday and we went to a save our schools barbeque last weekend where there were high school kids and parents and the high school drumline and the band and cheerleaders and little elementary school kids and teachers. and they talk to you and are incredibly accepting and it's crazy. i'm a part of this new community that's so drastically different from the ones i've been in so far in my life and so far off from the kinds of communities i'd ever imagined myself being a part of.
that's about all i have to say though, for now. i have PT tomorrow at 6 and that's sad so i have to sleep.

comment and tell me what you're doing and how things are and STUFF. i wanna know?!

in true ME fashion, i waited until the absolute last SECOND to do everything. hahah i figured i had plenty of time and if i started packing early it would be stupid, but once you start packing you just start realizing more and more things that you have to do that you didn't even think of, you know? and i knew this would happen but didn't really care. hahahahah so i fully expect to just all night it and skip the sleep that would normally happen before i leave at the ass crack of dawn on thursday to go to logan.

anywho i went to marshalls today to say farewell to some of my favorite fellow employees and bought a lot of stuff too.
and also, despite knowing that i have too much stuff to do and no time, i took a good chunk of time out today to watch failure to launch, which even though it had sarah jessica parker in it, was surprisingly good.

so yeah.
and i need to get people's addresses/phone numbers that i should know but clearly don't because i never use a real address book.......before i leave.

AND my mom made chicken parm last night and is squeezing my favorite meals into the last few days. mmm chicken parm.

my birthday was made super awesome by lots of cool people.
went to plimoth plantation and connected with a fellow cherokee hahahahahah. really got in touch with my heritage. saw the cutest native american toddler i've ever seen. not that i see a lot.
worked which was whatever but i got the most lucrative check of my carreer at marshalls so far at the end of the night, which was fun. got a good card and burts bees and good candy. got to cut the enormous line at pirates of the caribbean because i have cool friends who show up really early. and finally, had the pleasure of sitting next to vanessa during the movie. this good thing was only increased by the fact that the movie was incredibly long.

anyway i have all of tomorrow off from work and things and i plan on sleeping in, shopping at sea chest consignments with my mom hahahah, and having my family birthday dinner. i've narrowed down my choice of meals to chicken kabobs and chicken caeser salad. i dunno.
and the important thing, that you actually should read and isn't boring and pointless like the rest of this entry..

vanessa nikki kristen barbecue awesomeness. maybe next friday? if you're already busy then cancel your plans or make someone cover for you at work because everyone needs to be there because i don't know. although maybe not friday because i don't know yet and it depends on people's schmedules. anyway though. TALK TO ME.

HAPPY  BIRTHDAY AGAIN TO NIKKI AND VANESSA YAY!!

it's been a super long time since i've made any substantial updates so i just have one thing to say
what the fuck.

i just read this senate hearing thing regarding americorps and it's continued funding. until now all i knew was that the government was threatening to take away the annual funding that's being given to NCCC, but specific reasoning that i'm now realizing is so freaking transparent and retarded that i can hardly form coherent sentences to explain how incredibly shitty it all is. i'm clearly not writing the extent of the senate's claims here, and the same goes for my raging opposition to the majority of the stuff they're saying. if anyone feels like completely assailing their ears for about an hour, i could easily be prompted to engage in an endless rambling nonsensical rant.
but anyway
in summary
bullshit.

whether i get taken off the wait list or not..i'll flip shit if bush's proposal to cut funding goes through.
AUGH

additionally. my parents are watching brokeback mountain downstairs.
supremely awkward. i don't want to go downstairs for breakfast tomorrow and have them start talking about it HAHAHAH. i recommended it too. such a bad choice.

EVERYTHING. i'm so there. anyone coming with me? they open at ten and my mom said people might be lining up outside the door HAHAHAHAH. i freaking hope not because i don't feel like trampling some middle aged bitches to get to my one dollar purchases.

it's so hot.

i need to take a field trip to shaws soon to get sunscreen and gum.
once it rains tomorrow and stops being shitty weather-wise, i'm going to head my ass down the street to nantasket.

back from London
it was FUN. photos to come. the mass photobucket with pictures from the four of us will be good.

for a second today i felt like it was summer and then realized i have school on monday what the hell. but on the bright side, basically only a month left of high school.

after last minute mailing more scholarship stuff this morning I saw a help wanted sign at the fruit center and got an application. last time i did this a few years ago they didn't give me a job, which was freaking lame. so hopefully this time i actually get a job and if not i'm applying to marshalls in hingham.
i can't decide which would be better. marshalls i can get even bigger discounts on already cheap clothes. so we'll see.

tomorrow is the disc golf masters and tonight my dad is hosting the usual pre-event poker tournament.
aka, for the next two days my house/yard is filled with drunk losers in their twenties who have nothing better to do than to hang out with a 50 something year old man. i think my dad has more friends than i do.
and this sunday my family is celebrating a belated easter.

short summary quote from Bush last night, concerning our nation. courtesy of sheila.

Its greatness "is not measured in power or luxuries but by who we are and how we treat one another," he said.
"So we strive to be a compassionate, decent, hopeful society."

definitely off the charts hilarious.

in more hilarious news. finding the old Making the Band recaps was the most amazing moment of my life.
"Crowd surfing. A fan holds up a sign that reads, 'Dan, I want to be your liquid dream.' Ick."
..and last saturday night was fun )
